Extract brewing, is very similar to brewing with kits except it has distinct advantages, it allows a wider variety of beers to be made giving the brewer greater control over the brewing process. Some may also argue they taste better but now a days great tasting beer can be made using standard kits.

Rear Left: DME
Rear Right Unhopped LME
Mid Left: Vaccum Packed Hops
Front Left: Compressed Hops
Front Right: Specialist Grains

The draw back is more equipment is required. The extract, DME or LME is diluted, grains added then the mixture boiled along with the hops to extract their bitterness and flavour, the same way the brewery does. This requires a minimum 25L boiler. Once boiled the wort must be cooled quickly to reduce the chance if infection from bacteria requiring some sort of cooler. Once cool the wort needs to be seperated from the hops before adding to the fermenter. Fortunately there are a variety of boilers, chillers and hop strainers available from homebrew shops and for the DIY minded these can be made reasonably cheaply. There will be a section on this site with information on making your own boilers, chillers and hop strainers.
